The A*MIDEX Foundation launches two new calls for projects: Emergence & Innovation and Interdisciplinarity. We also publish a new call for applications intended for Chairs of Excellence, which will remain open over 2017.

April 29th, 2016: After a probationary period of 4 years, AMU and its partners (CNRS, Inserm, CEA, IRD, ECM, IEP, AP-HM) have been awarded the perpetuation of their Idex A*MIDEX after evaluation and on a proposal from the international jury, the same jury that had labeled the project in 2012.
The health and life sciences priority theme is one of the assets of the Aix-Marseille site. Furthermore, supporting collaborative projects which make more visible some themes which are clearly identified, unifying and considered as priorities and groundbreakers by all the partners of the site is one of A*MIDEX strategic goals. In this context, the creation of Hospital-University Departments/ Federations (DHU/FHU) is an opportunity for AMU and its partners of the Aix-Marseille site, which fits in A*MIDEX commitments with perfect consistency.
At the beginning of 2016, as A*MIDEX probationary period comes to an end, world class researchers benefit from endowed chairs funded by A*MIDEX. These chairs, hosted by research units of Aix-Marseille University and its partners, contribute to strengthen the scientific potential of the site, through the development of new themes and the creation of synergies with the local teams.
Aix-Marseille University, together with its A*MIDEX partners - CNRS, Inserm, IRD, CEA, AP-HM, Centrale Marseille, et Sciences Po Aix – held an international conference « Aix-Marseille and the Mediterranean: scientific challenges and collaborations » on February 12th and 13th 2015 at Villa Méditerranée, with the support of the Regional Council and of the A*MIDEX Foundation.
A*MIDEX International fund aims to support international collaborative research projects, especially in A*MIDEX priority scientific areas, for the purpose of developing the international influence and appeal of the Aix-Marseille site. The call for projects (CFP) launched in 2014 targeted the development of cooperation with partners from the Mediterranean area. This call enabled the selection of 15 structuring projects to either create or strengthen long-lasting bilateral collaborations, or to develop research networks in the Mediterranean area.
A*MIDEX promotes scientific risk-taking through the "Emergence and Innovation" fund. On the occasion of the call for projects (CFP) launched in 2014, 11 projects have been selected for their innovative nature. Either having an original approach or addressing an emerging research theme, these projects all have a strong potential in terms of innovation.
A*MIDEX launched an “Emergence and Innovation” call for projects focused on fusion by magnetic confinement, in order to strengthen scientific cooperation in this field between IRFM (CEA Cadarache) and several AMU – CNRS - ECM laboratories of the Aix-Marseille site and to increase the French participation in the ITER international program and in the WEST project.
The two “ Transfer” calls for projects launched by A * MIDEX in 2014, one multi-thematic and the other focused on optics and photonics, enabled the selection of 5 public-private research projects with high potential for innovation. The research units from the Aix-Marseille site involved in these projects will receive a budget of € 1.4 million.
Through its support to innovative interdisciplinary approaches, A*MIDEX promotes scientific daring and encourages the production of innovative knowledge, that may be potentially fruitful. This second “Interdisciplinary” call for projects, implemented within the five intersectorial and interdisciplinary research groups (PR2I) of Aix-Marseille University, aims to support research projects with a strong added value and addressing societal challenges identified in the context of European, national and regional science policies. Therefore this is a way to improve the positioning of projects led by AMU and its partners in national, European and more generally in international programs.
Starting from Autumn 2014, the Aix-Marseille site will welcome seven young talents, who will benefit from "Rising Star" packaged chairs funded by A*MIDEX. These chairs, backed up by host research units of AMU and its partners, will help to strengthen the scientific potential of the site, by the development of new research topics and the creation of synergies with teams on site.
27 PhD students will be funded by A*MIDEX for the next 3 years to carry out their doctoral studies under the supervision of Aix-Marseille University and one of the best universities worldwide.
A*MIDEX has created the « Excellence Academy » label to develop and give better visibility to the most innovative and attractive training programs of the Aix-Marseille site. Under this label, the training programs are supported throughout their development process: pedagogical development and innovations, internationalization, students and pedagogical staff exchanges, hosting of guest lecturers, establishment of innovative partnerships… In the framework of a 2nd call for proposals, launched in Fall 2013 and closed in January 2014, eight training programs have been awarded the “Excellence Academy” label for the 2 next academic years.
